A walk, poetry and some perspective!

The following article was published in the September 2012 issue of the magazine, Green Hope!

The world thinks that the greatness of America lies in the urban architectural structures and the modern skyscrapers. But, what people fail to perceive is that the steel and concrete just make a quarter of America’s beauty. The true beauty lies in the pockets of this huge country, where you feel most close to nature. Right in the arms of nature, surrounded by lakes, springs and critters, is how the true American likes to live. And not that, this was before urbanization. The suburb I moved to, is one that was recently developed, and yet there are no signs of excessive urbanization. You wake up to the merry chirp of birds, you see squirrels run on your deck (balcony), and rabbits nibbling on to nuts that fell in your backyard. The feeling of being so close to nature, without making an effort is unimaginable. Living with nature enclosing your daily routine is a marvelous sensation and unequaled by any other.

Walking around the lake, through a wooded trail, makes you feel this is where authors got their inspiration from. And the beauty of it lies in the fact that every season ushers in something new. It is the saplings and signs of new life that catch your eye in spring, whereas it is the lively activity of birds that fills summer. Autumn brings with it the iridescent colors and the preparation of birds ready to migrate. And the reason I am being able to describe all this is because nature is conserved the way it was supposed to be cherished. The advantages of being so close to natural wonders are manifold, one being, the appreciation for other lifer forms and the recognition that we all actually share resources. One of the thing that amazes me is the fact that the ducks, the loons, the turtles, rather than being scared of human activity, roam around unthreatened at all times. And that is only possible because there are no humans actually shooing or scaring the birds away, but rather minding their own business and going about their respective activities.

It is so common to see a raccoon, an otter, or a stork during your walk, that the need or the desire to visit a zoo is eliminated. It is so comforting to know that both the animals and humans here are so comfortable with each other, that neither side feels the need to interrupt with each other’s routines. Being around other species is not only a lesson in science for kids, but also teaches them profound lessons in sensitivity and respect for god’s creations. And once that realization has set in, it is easier to mold responsible citizens who are cognizant of the perils human ignorance could cause to the survival of other species. With so many ill-effects like global warming, depletion of resources, etc., it is vital to create a generation that is more aware of the needs of today for a harmonious tomorrow.

Witnessing the native bird and animal population in India dwindle because of ingesting plastic or incorrectly disposed medicines is heart-breaking. And it is small efforts like those made here, in terms of recycling, that help the native fauna sustain. The beauty of simply walking across a paddling of ducks is one of life’s taciturn moments. In such moments, the ease with which one can reflect upon the basic commonalities across different life forms is amazing. It is so heartening to witness the culmination of so many fellow human beings on just one bridge over the lake. The lake, the prairie grass that serves as an abode for the rich fauna, is just the perfect sanctum for a piebald community. You see photographers, artists, poets, nature-lovers and athletes enjoying the same view in varied ways. And then there are others who are just there for the sanctity, to soak in the view with a loved one. No matter, the agenda, all of them there have found a source to unwind. Only someone who has experienced the peace and the vivacity of nature together can perceive the importance of treasuring such spots.

What is striking is the fact that it is so easy to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, with small steps from us. The first step would be for appropriate garbage disposal and recycling. Throwing unwanted materials in the woods or the water will only result in an imbalance in the ecosystem caused due to either increased or decreased levels of a certain animal or bird population. That, of course, depending on the toxicity of the waste to the species in consideration. Another conscious effort from us could be to leave the flora and fauna as untouched as possible. That doesn’t mean not being outdoors in fear of trampling the grass, but just the realization that when you try to tamper a bird’s nest or a turtle cove, it is like someone shaking the walls of your house. It is very important for all members in an ecological niche to feel secure, for them to want to reside there. Some other measures that could be taken are to plant as many trees, grow lawns and have greenery to encourage a healthy food chain. If it were not for the grassy patches outside our apartment, I would never have had the privilege of watching a herd of deer wander into the apartment system, that too in the beautiful white snow.  It is spectacles like these that make you realize the importance of preserving the globe and it’s inhabitants in the purest form.

Imagine the beauty of a sunset with birds taking flight in the horizon, rather than just a plain sunset. Sometimes, all we need is a close conversation with nature to gain some perspective and it is but, what was meant to happen, before men came along and rearranged God’s scheme. It is said that one who loves nature, is never alone; and nothing else could be truer than that. I can only imagine what an effect a lack of landscape would have had on literature. Without the presence of awe-striking meadows, and mysterious woods, a William Wordsworth or Robert Frost could not have given the world, the mellifluous gems of their poetry.  And there would be no inspiration to remind the world of “the miles to go before I sleep”. Indeed, we are surrounded by miles and miles of natural beauty, it is for us to open our minds and preserve the milieu to enjoy a mutual existence.

Bane of Intellect!

There she was, wondering,
Beguiled at the simple joys of life.

A twinkle in her eye, and longing deep within,
She was snapped to reality with the pangs inside.

Desire, as she may, the banality of life,
Destined, she was, for the singularity of elite.

Choose, she had to between life and success,
Burdened, she was with gratification of prospects.

Run of the mill, she struggled to be,
Achievements, of hers separated her from reality.

Endowed, thought people was she,
Submerged, under a sea of aspirations was she.

Scared, she would underachieve,
Forgot, she, what she really wanted to be.

Standards, to be met of the society,
Plead, she would, to just be!

Intellect, her virtue was supposed to be,
Creativity, denied to her, would be.

Diligence, of hers would pay off,
Freedom of spirit, never offered a bite of.

No partner good enough, every relation an impediment,
A life she had, replete with triumphs, but no sentiment.

Expectations, her own, clashed with dreams,
Torn apart, between her potential and yearning.

Faced, she was with the eternal question,
Heart or mind, where lay the greater satisfaction....

Inspired after reading the book "Girl in Translation" by Jean Kwok, this is me thinking out loud, about society's expectations from people of intellect, of setting each person in a pre-defined mold, and how a lot of the times, women have to pick between a career and a family life.

Tacit Moments!

You and Me!

They ask, "What did you do today, how did you celebrate?",
I think, ponder and wonder "What did I do today?",
Deep in thought, I look back on the day,
And realize, I have nothing to say!

How can I not have anything to say,
I felt fulfilled and ecstatic,
Exultant, content, full of life,
and yet had nothing to say!

I nudge my precious, and ask him: "What do I say?"
He smiles at me, and says "Just tell them you enjoyed your day!"
I know I had a rapturous day,
But I have no clue what to say!

Ripples, gleaming sun, wind in the sail,
Things you can't articulate,
Memories shaping along the way,
Yet there is nothing to say!

Holding hands, gazing in the sun's heart,
Toes dipped in the cool water,
Watching the fish at play,
What could you possibly say?

Bills, jobs, chores, left at bay,
Dreams, aspirations, hopes led your way,
Imbued with the wind's libretto,
Still nothing to say!

A bed of sand, a pillow of grass,
The scent of wildflowers,
A heart-warming paddling of ducks,
How do you use words to say?

Cheery voices, little feet pattering,
Eloquent notes on the harp, your intertwined fingers drumming,
A rendezvous with bliss itself,
Trying to put words together, to say!

Freedom, elation, euphoria,
I could say,
But is that something you illustrate in words,
Or let your eyes, your silence say!

Elements of nature,
A sense of calm, they endow,
Moments of retrospection,
You think, but could possibly not say!

Voices drowned in traffic, T.V. and computers,
The soul drifts astray,
An abode then you find, for your quintessence,
But know not what to say!

Now and then, enjoying the sun,
Feeling the water, cherishing a posy,
Admiring the hinterland,
Leaves you astounded, with nothing to say!

My mind out of miasma,
A grin on my face,
A twinkle in my eye,
I know exactly what to say!

"With the ardor of a companion,
Gratified for the wonders of life,
I am happy as can be, ready to embrace both, the beauty and the beast!"
Is there anything more to say?

Confessions of a Chocoholic!

It is raining, the beautiful drops of water glistening on the fresh green leaves just starting to bud. The wind has a cool, serene flow to it. And the fragrance of dew drenched soil just fills your heart with joy. I am gazing out the window and trying to soak in this pleasure, when my mind grazes away and starts thinking about things that make me happy: the first drops of rain, the fragrance of a flower garden, the sight of a cuddly little squirrel or a rabbit, a good book, some soul-stimulating coffee, and, anything CHOCOLATE! The pleasure derived from chocolate is the one that adds on to any of the other joys mentioned above. And it does not actually have to be chocolate. Anything slightly resembling the taste of chocolate, strikes a chord with that part of the brain called the pleasure center. It could be a chocolate flavored coffee, chocolate shake, chocolate cake, choco pie, chocolate croissant, chocolate icecream, and the list is never-ending.

That moment when you place chocolate in your mouth, and your taste buds come to life; that moment when the taste buds are singing ecstatically, that moment when it is a party inside your mouth; it is that moment which defines everything for a chocoholic. The world ceases to exist for one long interim and there is no one but the appreciator and the muse. The beauty of chocolate is that all the worries are wiped away in that single moment and the world is suddenly full of bright and beautiful things. I don't know how it feels like to be high on a drug, but I can vouch for the fact that the euphoria brought on by chocolate is equally addicting. The mood-uplifting capacity of chocolate should qualify it to being an anti-depressant. I see so many infomercials about depression and the pills you could use to tackle depression and yes, the oh-so-long list of side effects; and I wonder why don't people just eat chocolate and get rid of their depression. Believe me, if you lay your hands on rich chocolate, the moment you eat it and it melts on your tongue, it feels like it was made for you, you feel special and appreciated. This may sound crazy to most people, but chocolate lovers over the world would know what I am talking about. Eating great chocolate is like pampering yourself. It is like the chocolate speaks to you 'Go on, indulge yourself and feel special; that little bite of heaven was made for you and you deserve it'.

The chocoholic that I am, a few days back, when I entered a bakery and came across the world's most 'happy cakes', I almost had a mini collapse. Now the reason I call them 'happy cakes' is because I know even if nothing else worked, these would bring me up from one of those tough blows life hands you. They are my life savers. And now, you must be wondering why I had a mini collapse; I had been looking for great chocolate cakes since the time I had landed in America, and I was tired of eating the same old Turtle Cake, and Cheese cakes and the other usual stuff. I had been looking for custom-made cakes for chocoholics, the ones that have so much rich chocolate and such a moist layer to it that you would not know what you had done to deserve this. I am talking about the cakes that are all dark brown, with some chocolate syrup dangerously sliding down the edge of the cake, and scream "Pick me, I am the one you want". And this quest of mine had led me to try horrible, horrible things that would have a tinge of chocolate and would still dare to call themselves choco-pecan pie or something.

This was my day, I felt like an achiever. I had finally come face to face with my muse. The one I had seen in my dreams, the one that egged on the flow of creative juices inside me, the one that made me believe in heaven. And like it always happens, when you finally stand across from that great conquest of yours, you need to be pinched, to confirm reality. And yes, my husband did it, more out of embarrassment than out of a favor to me. Embarrassment for the child-like squeals that I did not know were coming from me. You see, I was completely lost in admiring that glass display that had the most luring options ever. I behaved like a spoilt brat, acting all crazy: "I want all of them, I can't decide which one....Please get me all of them, I want them right now!" and I am not even ashamed of it. I was running end to end, luckily with my eyes and not my feet, otherwise my husband would have abandoned me in that bakery long ago.

Finally my husband had to use his stern voice and say "We are getting two for now, pick what you want". And then again my scanning process started. I kept gazing at each one and analyzed them from all angles. It was like we shared a common language and they knew what I wanted. My husband shook me twice "Please don't do that, don't look at them like it is the first time you have seen cake". I mean he was right, I was almost drooling there, with that hungry look in my eyes, but I couldn't help it. This was that moment I had been waiting for, so I was going to enjoy as much as possible. If I could only get two, I was going to take in the rest with my eyes, my 'hungry, greedy eyes', to quote my husband. But, eventually I had to decide on the two I wanted the most, the two that had been successful in selling themselves to me, not just with how chocolatey they looked, but also with how welcoming they were.

When we walked out of the bakery, I wouldn't let my husband even touch the box, and held it so carefully as to not disturb even one edge of the pastry. These were the most beautiful cakes in the world, they even had a piece of dark chocolate on the top and some raspberries to keep me interested. There were nuts, and choco chips and chocolate syrup and by then I was losing it. I couldn't wait to get home, tear apart the box and start digging in. My husband was looking at me and said, "The way you are fondling the box, you might very well start muttering 'My Precious', with that Gollum look in your eyes". It is true, I was possessed by that cake and that mean streak I get when I can't get myself to concentrate on anything but the chocolate, had started to show. Laughing at me, my husband said "They look good, but I don't think I could eat more than one bite of each". That is when I looked up in shock. First, that somebody could actually insult those wonderful creations like that and second, replying, "What do you mean one bite? This is for me; if you wanted some, you should have gotten one for yourself"!

By the time we reached home, I was in that ever-existing dilemma of every choco-lover: to eat or not to eat. The cake looked so beautiful that I couldn't destroy its beauty, but it was so tempting that I could not not eat it. I was playing with the forks and spoons, weighing out my options, when my husband dug his fork into the first cake, me open-mouthed, looking disbelievingly at him, and..............and he put the spoonful in my open mouth. And that was it, no longer was I faced by any dilemma, worry or tribunal. I was transported to the world of chocolates and was relishing, the rich, creamy taste, thanking God for making such wonderful pleasures in life. "How is it, how is it.....?" I was brought back from heaven with these questions from my husband, and all I could say was "When can we go back for more?".
